Gather Necessary Tools:Before starting, make sure you have the essential tools for sharpening woodturning tools. You'll need a bench grinder with appropriate grinding wheels, a sharpening jig, a diamond stone or honing guide, safety glasses, and a dust mask
Safety First:Safety glasses shield your eyes from sparks and debris. A dust mask is also recommended to avoid inhaling sharpening dust.
Secure the Tool:Use a sharpening jig to keep the woodturning tool steady. This keeps the tool's edge geometry and sharpening angle uniform. Set up the sharpening jig per manufacturer's instructions.
Select the Grinding Wheel:Use the right grinding wheel for your woodturner. Use a coarse 60-80 grit wheel for initial shaping and a fine 120-180 grit wheel for honing and finishing.
Grind the Bevel:Starting the grinder, carefully grind the woodturning tool bevel against the revolving wheel. Stay calm and move the tool to avoid overheating and metal damage. To cool the tool, occasionally dip it in water.
Establish a Sharp Edge:Keep grinding until the bevel is crisp. To maintain a uniform sharpening, examine the edge and make changes regularly.
Hone the Edge:A diamond stone or honing guide can hone the edge for a razor-sharp edge. Use even pressure to move the tool across the stone. We remove burrs and polish the edge here.
Test and Adjust:After sharpening, test the woodturning tool on a piece of scrap wood to ensure it cuts smoothly. If adjustments are needed, go back to the grinder or honing stone as necessary.
